The 5 Best Luxury Experiences For Black Women

Less of the strong black woman narrative and more of the carefree black woman indulging in luxury! Society has placed so many labels on black women from strong to angry to being the backbone of the black family. This dialogue forces us to equate our worth to how much turmoil and misery we can bear.⁣ We are seen as selfish or “acting white” if we vacation in the Greek islands, sip the finest champagne, take a spa day, or even hire a housekeeper/nanny.⁣

Listen sis, your worth is NOT tied to how much you can struggle. Black women DO and DESERVE to stay at 5 star hotels, engage in fine dining, book that 4 hour spa treatment, and hire help to make their lives easier. ⁣I am for ALL women living their best lives, but especially my sisters who have been tricked into thinking their pride stems from burden. ⁣I’m sharing 5 luxurious experiences to be on any woman’s list!

1. Stay in a 5-star hotel

Listen, I've done it all from backpacking in hostels to overlooking the caldera in Santorini. For a grown, working woman, there's nothing quite as satisfying as staying in 5-star accommodations. Do you have to always stay in 5-star hotels? Of course not, but if you can, definitely consider it at least once in your life. These type of hotels will not only give you spacious, clean, and beautiful rooms, but the right one will give you access to a breathtaking view right from your bed! This is usually what makes me decide on a room. These accommodations usually come with a large soaking tub to engage in even more pampering, and the service is top notch. The cost of a 5-star hotel sounds daunting? Consider booking one night at the end of your trip or doing a staycation so you can avoid paying for airfare. Here are my top 5-star hotels that I have personally stayed at:

Villa Katikies - Santorini, Greece

The Omnia - Zermatt, Switzerland

Hotel Villa Honegg - Ennetburgen, Switzerland

Fontainebleau - Miami Beach, Florida

Kempinski Hotel - Accra, Ghana

Sandton Sun - Johannesburg, South Africa

Excellence Playa Mujeres - Cancun, Mexico

The Venetian - Las Vegas, Nevada

Viceroy Chicago - Chicago, Illinois

Miramar Hotel by Windsor - Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

2. Dine in a fancy restaurant AND order the most expensive item on the menu

How many times have you treated yourself or been treated to a 5-star dining experience only to feel guilty and look for the cheapest thing on the menu. Sis, stop doing that! Fine dining isn't an everyday occurrence, so if you're going to splurge, splurge! Order an appetizer, drinks (maybe even two rounds or three), a hefty entree, and dessert. You won't finish it all, but then you can pack up something scrumptious to enjoy even more luxury at home the next day. We have to practice walking into a room and feeling like we belong. I've eaten at too many lovely restaurants to name, but here is a blog post I did on top date night spots in Miami. Even if its not date night, you still deserve the best!

3. Book an extravagant spa day with MULTIPLE treatments

I emphasized the word "multiple" here because we often feel guilty for even booking that one massage or pedicure. No! We are going to have a spa DAY filled with multiple treatments from head to toe. Have a body scrub, massage, facial, manicure, pedicure, even scalp massage if you're natural. Whatever you do, don't feel guilty about it. A great way to indulge in spa activities at a fraction of the cost is to wait until you visit a country where the dollar travels far. Two of my most memorable spa experiences have been in Morocco at the Royal Mansour hotel and Bali at Bali Green Spa. I paid anywhere from 25-50% of what I would have paid in the States, and the service was excellent.

4. Outsource housework

Growing up, I thought anyone who hired a housekeeper was either super rich or lazy. Well I'm not rich, and I'm definitely not lazy. In fact I take on WAY too many projects (out of passion!), which is why I benefit from having someone clean my home. I've had a house cleaner intermittently for the last 5 years, and I can honestly say I feel less overwhelmed when I have one. My husband is a lot happier with one too; he doesn't care who cleans it, as long as its clean. I still spot clean everyday, do dishes, laundry, wipe down counters, etc., but now I'm letting a professional deep clean my house every other week. You can also consider once a month to cut down on costs. For anyone who lives in the South Florida area, I would be happy to share my cleaning lady. Remember, not all cleaners are the same so make sure you're satisfied with the work that is done.

5. Take time for yourself

This one costs absolutely nothing, but probably does the most for your mental health. It can be difficult to take some time to relax without working, caring for your family, or attending to some other commitment. Taking 30 minutes to a hour to prioritize your needs can rejuvenate you and it's a luxury that not many people experience. Some of my favorite ways to get that time in is by meditating, doing yoga, applying a face mask, soaking in a warm bath, reading, or journaling.

What’s your favorite way to enjoy some luxury? And when last have you done it?⁣

xoxo, Global Midwife
